Functional Medicine: A Personalized, Root-Cause Approach to Healing

Functional medicine is a science-based, systems-oriented approach that focuses interventions on a deeper level: on uncovering internal imbalances that initiate and perpetuate disease and modifying the root cause in order to restore whole-body health. Rather than masking symptoms or applying a one-size-fits-all solution, we consider the full picture—your genetics, environment, lifestyle, and life story—to understand what’s driving illness and how to create true healing.

Healing doesn’t happen overnight—and neither did illness. Unlike conventional care, which often stops at a diagnosis and prescription, functional medicine is a collaborative process that unfolds over time: in the work I do, the work you do, and the work we do together.

One size does not fit all

Every Person Is Unique

Your genetics, environment, relationships, nutrition, stress levels, and life experiences all interact to shape your health. At Truly Well, we don’t just ask, “What disease does this person have?”—we ask, “What person developed this condition?”

This shift in perspective helps uncover the deeper patterns behind illness: why it began, why it persists, and what your body needs to return to balance. By understanding your unique vulnerabilities and strengths, we’re able to craft a healing plan that is truly personalized—designed for your biology, your story, and your goals.

Trigger + Terrain = Illness

Illness Isn’t Random

Most chronic illness begins when a trigger—like a toxin, infection, trauma, or prolonged stress—meets an underlying vulnerability in the body. We call this the interaction of trigger and terrain.

To uncover the root cause and create a path to healing, we explore three key questions:

This process is investigative, individualized, and deeply respectful of your body’s wisdom. By identifying both the stressors and the imbalances beneath the surface, we can begin to restore health—from the inside out.

Remove & Replenish

Functional Healing Areas

To restore health, we start with the basics. Your body is designed to heal—but only when we remove what harms and replenish what heals.

These five foundational areas are where every patient begins. Small, steady shifts in each of these can create meaningful, long-term change.

Restorative sleep and nervous system balance are essential for healing. We address both sleep quality and daily practices that help regulate your stress response.

Movement improves energy, metabolism, mood, circulation, and more. We’ll help you find the right type and amount of movement for your current health status.

Food is one of the most powerful tools we have. We’ll explore how nutrition can reduce inflammation, restore gut health, and support your body’s healing systems.

Chronic stress is a major disruptor of health. Together, we build tools to calm your system, reframe patterns, and support your emotional well-being.

Connection is a core need. We address how the quality of your relationships and support system may be impacting your health—and how to strengthen them.

These areas form the foundation of whole-person healing. Many patients begin with small changes, with the option to receive support from our health coaches and monthly wellness workshops. Over time, these new habits become the building blocks of a healthier, more resilient life.

Clinical Focus: Restoring Balance

My job is to identify imbalances in the body’s core systems and guide you toward restoring them.

We use comprehensive lab testing and advanced diagnostics to uncover subtle imbalances that conventional medicine often overlooks. Rather than simply naming a disease, we ask deeper questions about function, flow, and communication between systems. These systems don’t operate in isolation. When one is disrupted, others are affected. Functional medicine helps untangle these interconnections—and support the body’s ability to heal itself.

Gut Health

The gut is foundational to every other system in the body. We assess digestion, absorption, the microbiome, and the gut lining to restore balance at the root.

Immune Function & Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is a common thread in most modern illness. We evaluate immune regulation and help calm the fire—without suppressing the body’s natural defenses.

Energy Production (Mitochondria)

Your cells rely on mitochondria to generate energy. When this system is impaired, you feel it as fatigue, brain fog, or poor recovery. We help restore your energy at the cellular level.

Detoxification Pathways

Your liver and detox systems are constantly working to clear toxins. We assess these pathways and provide targeted support to ensure your body can safely eliminate what it doesn’t need.

Circulation & Lymphatic Flow

Efficient circulation and lymph movement support nutrient delivery, immune health, and cellular waste removal. We work to optimize both systems so the body can nourish and cleanse itself.

Hormone Balance

We evaluate the full hormonal picture—from thyroid and cortisol to estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and insulin—and guide you toward balance that supports your stage of life.

Structural Integrity

From posture and movement to cellular scaffolding and fascia, your body’s physical structure influences pain, energy, and function. We consider both macro and micro structure in our care.

If sex hormones are not balanced, it can lead to issues like irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, mood swings, reduced libido, muscle building, bone health, and overall well-being.

Checking thyroid-stimulating hormones, hormone levels, and antibodies help accurately diagnose thyroid disorders and identify autoimmune issues affecting thyroid function.

What's good for the heart is good for the brain. Blood tests for vitamin B12, thyroid function, homocysteine, and CRP can access brain health by revealing deficiencies or inflammation affecting cognitive function.

Measuring micronutrients helps assess whether you're getting essential vitamins and minerals needed for optimal health. It can identify deficiencies or imbalances that might affect overall well-being and guide dietary or supplement adjustments.

Measuring body composition helps assess the proportion of fat, muscle, and other tissues in the body. It provides a clearer picture of health and fitness than weight alone, aiding in personalized health planning and monitoring progress.

There are several different cancer screenings available. PSA is a marker used to check for prostate problems, including cancer. CA-125 is used to detect ovarian issues, including cancer.

Poor metabolic health is linked to a higher risk of chronic disease like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity.

Whole Health Means Healing the Full Person

Your body doesn’t operate in isolation—and neither does your health. Mental, emotional, spiritual, and social factors all play a vital role in how you feel, function, and heal.

When these areas are out of balance, they can block recovery, trigger physical illness, and disrupt the body’s natural rhythms. At Truly Well, we don’t separate the physical from the emotional or spiritual—we look at the full picture. If your mental, emotional, or spiritual self is unwell, your body will send illness signals.

Healing isn’t just about labs or prescriptions. It’s about restoring harmony across all levels of your being—so you can feel truly well.

“You and your team have truly changed my life. You found things my regular doctor never would have, and taught me how to heal. It’s still a work in progress, but I never would have gotten here without you!

– J.

At each visit there has been so much time spent thoroughly discussing how I’ve been feeling, what test results have shown, and what we should do to address these things. She also makes sure to explain the why behind everything so you understand the rationale and you’re not just blindly told to do something. I’ve felt truly listened to and cared for.

– M.S.

“I appreciate the full panel of labs that were done, and how quickly you were able to get back to me about a treatment plan and long term help to get healthier!

– Anonymous

“I had labs taken and tests performed that no other practitioner had ever told me about and the wide range of new information that I gained was so informative and illuminating to different things I have going on! It’s such a relief when being diagnosed with autoimmune issues 15 years ago to have the knowledge I have now to finally help heal myself from diet/nutrition.
